What makes Plantation* so special?
A very dark green color… the darkest fescue available on the market today. Nearly identical in deep, rich green color to our darkest Kentucky Bluegrass sod.
- A fine leaf blade… nearly identical in appearance and texture to Kentucky Bluegrass
- Drought-resistance… requires about 1/3 less watering. Typically doesn’t require an irrigation system
- Minimal fertilization… Plantation is bred to maintain its dark green color with about 1/3 less fertilization
- Dwarf growth habit… low-growing means less mowing
- It’s thick… this sod is lush, just like a premium lawn should be
- Minimal insect and disease problems… grubs don’t like it! Minimize insect and disease treatments
- The ability to withstand low mowing heights… 1.6 to 2 inches
- Possesses a rhizomous trait... helps fill in holes or thin areas that can develop in a lawn over time
- A high tolerance for foot traffic
- High spring and summer density
For these reasons, many of Lincoln’s top builders and developers insist on Plantation sod for all of their new home construction and commercial landscaping projects. And if protecting our natural resources is of any concern to you, Plantation sod is the environmentally responsible way to establish your lawn. While less expensive water-wasting grasses may be cheaper in the short term, your water savings with Plantation will really add up in the long run. After all, water is one of the homeowner's most expensive utilities. Additionally, Plantation’s small appetite for fertilization helps keep our groundwater supply free of unnecessary chemicals.
Plantation was developed by Dr. William Meyer at Rutgers University. It’s recommended for use in premium home lawns, golf course fairways and roughs, sporting fields and parks. Take it from us, Plantation is not your father’s Fescue and it has little in common with old, outdated Fescue varieties such as K-31 that you might see in a public park or on a roadside. Plantation has the lush look and texture of Kentucky Bluegrass, but retains the low water and fertilizer needs of a Fescue. Simply put, it’s the best of both worlds! We encourage you to see it for yourself.
Nebraska Sod’s Plantation Turf-Type Tall Fescue is an excellent choice for your residential or commercial lawn. It performs well in shaded areas, withstands heat, drought, and poor soil conditions. At the same time its color, density and disease-resistance minimize the need for irrigation and chemicals. A moderate maintenance program can produce spectacular results in your lawn.

Rooting Depth Comparison
A deeper root means more water-gathering ability. This translates into less watering for you.

*Plantation sod contains 7% non-aggressive bluegrass which has been specifically developed to blend with and complement Plantation. This nearly unnoticeable amount of rhizomous Bluegrass helps hold the sod together for harvesting and maintains density by spreading and filling any thin areas that may develop in a lawn over time.
This year we are harvesting a new and improved generation of Plantation. This new crop is even darker, more fine-bladed and more disease-resistant than previous strains of Plantation. Don't be fooled by imitators. Others may claim to sell Plantation (or something "similar") but Nebraska Sod is the only grower of this latest, improved generation. |
